On November 30, 2007 a fire in the mall shopping area of the main beach destroyed a number of businesses.  Plans are underway to rebuild this section of the popular main beach area. The nostalgic mall area is only one small section of the Main Beach Area.

Most  of the buildings along Beach Drive went untouched including the landmark Dardanella which is still open and operating.  Other popular attractions along the beachfront including bars, shops and restaurants were not affected by the fire.
