The soft white sand feels warm on your bare feet. The sun is shining on your head and shoulders (covered with a cap and the appropriate level of sunscreen, of course!). A seagull circles above, poised for a morsel from your picnic lunch. And in front of you, the amazing, ever-changing azure waters of Nottawasaga Bay continue as far as the eye can see. You, my friends, are at Wasaga Beach in Ontario, Canada. Though you could be forgiven for thinking you’ve stumbled on some sparkling tropical paradise.
This playground is, in fact, the longest freshwater beach in the world, stretching in a ribbon of sand for 14 kilometres. Wasaga Beach is famous, too, for its breathtaking sunsets. No evening sky is ever the same.
And the fun doesn’t stop when the summer ends and the boats, sunbathers, swimmers and classic hot rods have given way to mounds of leaves, then freshly fallen snow. There is no "off-season" here, for this is truly a four-season resort.
The fall lures the anglers, who know Wasaga for its sport fishing. It also attracts those on scenic drives in search of the region’s famous colours. Marvel as leaves turn to crimson, orange and bright yellow against the backdrop of the imposing Blue Mountains.
Don’t forget to wear comfortable shoes along the hiking trails of Wasaga’s unique sand dunes. Fall is also the ideal time to try one of the region’s golf courses. Go ahead, give it your best shot!
When the white stuff surrounds you, step boldly into the picture as you ski cross country or zip about on your snowmobile. Wasaga has more than 120 kilometres of groomed trails running through hills and dense forests. Don’t forget that fantastic downhill skiing and snowboarding are just a short ride away. Or stick close to town and watch as some of Ontario’s leading dog-sledding teams gather for a friendly winter competition.
Soon the snow melts, and the land gradually reawakens. The boaters, anglers and hikers are back to find nature in her spring glory. The cycle that is Wasaga is about to begin all over again.
