SAFETY FIRST!

Wasaga Beach offers families endless days of fun in the sun, and with a little awareness and caution, each visit will be an enjoyable time. With 14 kilometres of sandy beach, a million visitors and the vastness of Nottawasaga Bay, children become disoriented easily as all of the surroundings become one. In order to reduce the chances of your child becoming lost; familiarize yourself with these helpful hints:

  • Ensure your child is supervised at all times while in the water, during washroom visits and at the play areas.
  • Make your picnic site easily identifiable to your child by a distinct landmark e.g. Umbrella, balloon, colourful towel, numbered street ends, etc.
  • Know exactly what your child is wearing. Ensure your child is aware that park staff will help should they become lost – identify these staff to your child upon arrival to the beach.
  • If you have a lost child, contact park staff or O.P.P. at once. Public pay phones are located at each park entrance. For emergencies dial 911 or call the Provincial Park Office at 429-2516.

A Quiet Danger; Offshore Winds

Offshore winds are evident when the bay is calm. Days when there is no wind in your face as you stare out across the bay are days you should avoid letting your children use their inflatable toys. When offshore winds are strong, inflatable toys, rafts and small paddleboats can become victim to winds that carry them out to deep water. Should this situation arise, contact park staff immediately. Please ensure your children do NOT chase their toys.

Cruising down the Nottawasaga and wondering where to dock? The Town of Wasaga Beach operates day docking facilities overlooking the Nancy Island site.
The 20 protected slips are close to Wasaga's shops, restaurants, entertainment and, of course, the longest freshwater beach in the world! These are ideal for boats up to 32 feet, with draught not exceeding 3.5 feet.
Wasaga Beach also provides two public launch facilities and two marinas (Wasaga Marine and Sturgeon Point Marina) offering docking facilities, gas and supplies. Because of fluctuating water levels in the Great Lakes, make sure you check ahead.
The Nottawasaga River also features exceptional canoeing. Choose from a 2 or 3 day excursion winding your way 75 km downstream, or if you're looking for a day  trip, try the lower section of the River starting at Edenvale and running 23 km through Jack's Lake, past the steep cliffs of Wasaga's inland sand dunes to Wasaga Beach. Canoeists must be aware of high spring water levels, rocks and floating debris.
